1989 Fleer Baseball Cards Set consists of 660 cards. Card fronts feature a distinctive gray border background with white pinstripes and yellow trim. The cards are organized alphabetically within team. Unlike previous year's, however, where the World Series champion (in this case the Dodgers) would be lead off the set, the entire set is ordered by 1988 regular season record with Oakland (the '88 World Series runner-up) going first.
Subsets
The last 33 cards in the set consist of SuperStar Specials (628-639), Major League Prospects (640-653), and checklists (654-660).
Rookies
Rookie Cards in this set include Craig Biggio, Ken Griffey Jr., Randy Johnson, Gary Sheffield, and John Smoltz.
Errors
The 1989 Fleer Baseball Cards Set is known for the sheer amount of errors and variations. Approximately half of the California Angels players have white rather than yellow halos. Certain Oakland A's player cards have red instead of green lines for front photo borders. Checklist cards are available either with or without positions listed for each player. The two most famous errors are #616 Billy Ripken and #381 Randy Johnson.
